Fettered Wrists, Burning Heart (Acts 28:17–31)

Acts 28:17–31: Fettered Wrists, Burning Heart (by Jonathan Parker, Senior Pastor JBC)

During his second imprisonment in Rome, Paul writes, "Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound!" Although Paul was in chains, the gospel of Jesus Christ was spreading. Persecution, shame, and imprisonment would not keep Paul silent or stop the gospel. May God grant us hearts lit with fire for Jesus, just like Paul's.

Longing for Eden — Rumors of a Righteous King
Longing for EdenlAlthough our world is good in many ways, life is marred by sin and a real sense of exile from Eden — the place where truth, goodness, and love reigned. Longing for Eden
Longing for EdenThe famous children’s show Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood took everything normally associated with great TV and flipped it on its head: low budget, no shiny persona, and slow moving. But what it had was an echo of Eden. Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood conveyed love, welcome, friendship, acceptance, safety, peace, unity. We long for Eden — a world free from sin, suffering, death, arrogance, depravity, fragmentation, and selfishness; a place where love, truth, and goodness reign. Is there any hope for a world like ours? Absolutely. King Jesus is coming. In part 1 of this short series, we are reminded of where we are in the real story of the world. Disruptive Faith, Faithful God (Acts 27:27–44)
In this last part of Acts 27, Paul’s FAITH, based on God’s promise and past faithfulness stands out against the FEAR that dominates the life-threatening ship he is on. His faith is DISRUPTIVE because reveals a different LIFE FOUNDATION — one that others on the ship do not have — Jesus.

    The Long Night (Acts 27:1–26)
In the what seems like an endless and perilous trip, God reminds Paul of His plan and promise. Regardless of how it appears, both Paul and his fellow travelers will be delivered. Although the view doesn't change, Paul is certain that the same One who delivered him in the past will deliver him once again.

    Checkmate (Acts 25:13–Acts 26)
CheckmateReflecting on his own hostility toward God, C.S. Lewis once said, "Who can duly adore that Love which will open the high gates to a prodigal who is brought in kicking, struggling, resentful, and darting his eyes in every direction for a chance of escape?" With white-hot fury, the apostle Paul tried to end Christianity. Now he longs for the great and small to know Jesus Christ, just like he does. What could possibly change his mind? Just like Paul, God is pursuing us. Real grace and real forgiveness is at hand for both the great and the small.

    700 Sunsets (Acts 24:22–25:12)
700 SunsetsOver 700 sunsets come and go as Paul waits for the Lord's promise that he will take the good news about Jesus Christ to Rome. Just like Paul, the people of God often have to wait for His promises to unfold. Very simply, Paul's spiritual secret was to fix his eyes on Jesus.
